Picayune Police officers worked two DUI incidents this week, one involving a two vehicle collision that resulted in a 13-year-old child being critically injured, while the second involved the assault of an officer by the suspect.

Assistant Chief Dustin Moeller said one of the incidents was called into the department on Monday just after 10 p.m. concerning a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 59 near exit 1.

Officers arrived to find that three people were in one of the vehicles at the location of the collision, including a 13-year-old child suffering from critical injuries. The driver, an adult female who was not named, and a 10-year-old child, were not severely injured, Moeller siad.

The 13-year-old child was initially transported to Highland Community Hospital, but was later transferred to University Hospital in New Orleans, La. Moeller said that at press time Friday the child was still listed as being in critical condition.

The driver of the second vehicle, Randal Wade Moore, 62, 401 Ormond Blvd., Destrehan, La., was arrested for aggravated DUI, Moeller said. The investigation is ongoing and detectives are waiting for results from the Mississippi Crime Lab and for an accident reconstruction report from the Mississippi Department of Public Safety. Moeller added that the arrest is not an accusation and the suspect should be considered innocent until proven guilty.

In a separate incident that occurred on Sept. 7, officers on duty observed a white Ford pickup truck run a stop sign while speeding, leading to a traffic stop just after midnight that day.

During the stop, the driver, Timothy Wayne Manberg, 58, of 27 Liberty Rd., appeared intoxicated, leading to a field sobriety test. Manberg later became combative and as the officer attempted to arrest him, Manberg repeatedly attempted to grab at the officer’s firearm and assaulted the officer, Moeller said.

After taking Manberg into custody for DUI and aggravated assault on an officer, he was taken to Highland Community Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the scuffle, Moeller said. After he was treated he was booked into the jail for the offenses.
