Five Mississippi counties have confirmed cases of COVID-19 coronavirus increasing at nearly twice the state average rate, according to numbers released by the Mississippi State Department of Health.

On Monday, state health officials reported 2,942 confirmed cases of COVID-19. It took only 10 days for the number of cases in Mississippi to double from the 1,455 cases reported on April 5.

Cases are doubling at a faster rate than the state average in 33 of Mississippi’s 82 counties. On Monday, the number of COVID-19 cases reported in five of those counties doubled in half the time as the state average.

Stone County leads the state. In just four days Stone County has doubled the number of cases in approximately four days — from 5 cases on April 10 to 11 cases on Monday. Similarly, Claiborne County has also doubled the number of cases in four days — from 3 cases on April 10 to 7 cases on April 13.

Covington County, Adams County and Neshoba County also have rates of reported cases that are double the state average. Each county doubled the number of COVID-19 cases in 5 days.

• Covington County: 7 cases on April 9 to 15 cases on April 13
• Adams County: 27 cases on April 9 to 57 cases on April 13
• Neshoba County: 17 cases on April 9 to 34 cases on April 13

In the last two weeks, seven Mississippi counties have significantly slowed the rate of confirmed virus cases. Benton, Choctaw, Coahoma, Lawrence, Lee, Tippah and Tunica counties all have taken more than two weeks to double the number of reported cases in each county.
