The benefits of being single on Valentine’s Day

hope all of you are aware that today is Valentine’s Day. If not – fellas – you may be in deep trouble.

Valentine’s Day means different things to a lot of people. To those who are single, I’ve heard it referred to as “S.A.D.” or “Single Awareness Day.”

For years, I was in the “S.A.D. Club” and watched my co-workers send or receive a bouquet of delivered red roses or flowers. I watched them tear open a box of chocolates, put their stuffed animals on their desk and overheard them make dinner plans with their significant other.

Fortunately, that changed just a few years ago and a very special lady came into my life and kept me from falling helplessly into the pit of the “S.A.D. Club” and on the track to becoming the organization’s unofficial president.

So on this Valentine’s Day I want to reach out to those “S.A.D.” members out there who may be feeling a little down in the dumps. Do not fret because there are several reasons you should celebrate today. Here are just a few:

1) You get to save money. No wasting … I mean spending money on someone other than yourself buying candy, cards and flowers. Winning!

2) You can do whatever you want. You don’t have to make plans with a significant other and try to fight the crowds of people congregating at restaurants.

3) You don’t have to argue about which movie you’re going to see with your significant other. Or you can save some more money and control the remote at home watching whatever you want.

4) There’s no pressure to try and find a date, unlike those awkward Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties.

But in all seriousness, to me, Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to tell those we care about the most we love them – something we should do on a regular basis without prompting from a Hallmark card.

So with that in mind, I’d like to wish the woman who loved me first and the most a very Happy Valentine’s Day. You are truly the best Mom a kid could ever hope for.

To my now married daughter, I am truly blessed by God to be your Dad. I am so proud of the person you have become and continue to amaze me.

And to the lady who saved me from the depths of “S.A.D.” I say “thank you” for making every day Valentine’s Day.

And to all of you, Happy Valentine’s Day … especially to those celebrating “Single Awareness Day.”
