As Mississippi National Guard members deploy to the Middle East, locals can provide support for their families
While these guardsmen are prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country, the loved ones left behind are making sacrifices as well.
“Say Yes to the Dress” is the brainchild of Oxford High School girls’ fitness teacher Rose Hickey, who started the program as a way to give every girl a chance to have the fabled “princess moment,” of trying on a prom dress for the first time.
The film, titled “Door in the Woods,” was shot in Mathus’ native Arkansas in late 2016. Filming lasted three weeks and the majority of scenes were outdoors. Mathus says these conditions made for a challenging but rewarding shoot.
The folks at Tallahatchie Gourmet in Oxford got a big surprise a couple weeks ago when a visit from the Mississippi Gaming Commission shut down their weekly Bingo Night event.
“When you think of the southern cocktail, most people think of brown liquor,” Milam said. “But in the colonial United States, rum was the foundational spirit. By the mid-1600s, rum was being made in large supply in the British Caribbean Islands.”
The second-annual Pop Up Oxford, a week-long event designed to highlight Oxford’s cultural scene, will kick off this Saturday, Jan. 20 and run through the 27.
