In District 38, democratic representative Tyrone Ellis of Starkville retired and Narissa Bradford, Lisa Wynn and Cheikh Taylor are vying for his spot.

Bradford is a former model, activist and media executive who returned to Starkville almost six years ago after traveling around the world for her career. Wynn is a former teacher and Starkville alderman, and currently is the chief administrative officer for a construction company. Meanwhile Taylor is the executive director of a program that aides early education and affordable housing called the Brickfire Project, and told the Daily Journal that Ellis compelled him to run for the position.

“I was drafted into running by Tyrone Ellis,” Taylor said. “He thought I would be a good person to follow him…He has been a friend and a mentor of mine.”

According to the Daily Journal, all three candidates have education at the center of their campaign.

“All voiced support for the full funding of the Mississippi Adequate Education Program, which provides the bulk of state funding for the basic operation of local school districts.”

District 10’s seat was vacated after Bill Stone, the state senate’s Democratic leader, stepped down to become the head of the Holly Springs Utility Department

Michael Cathey, Sharon D. Gipson, Lennell ‘Big Luke’ Lucas, Ray Minor and Neil S. Whaley are all running for his seat.

In District 54, the state representative seat was opened after Alex Monsour won an election to become Vicksburg’s South Ward alderman. Three candidates are fighting for his spot.

“Vicksburg contractor Joe Bonelli, Dr. Randy Easterling and Kevin Ford, owner of the Ford Insurance Agency, are candidates to fill the seat vacated by former state Rep. Alex Monsour.”
