A Mississippi sheriff’s deputy reportedly shot and killed a motorist who fled from a traffic stop and then fired at the deputy.
The incident occurred Monday evening in Union County, west of Pontotoc, WTVA-TV reported.
Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards told local media that the incident started with a deputy attempted to pull over a motorist for a traffic violation.
The driver allegedly got out of the car, then got back in and fled, eventually crashing into another motorist on Highway 9. The driver allegedly shot at the deputy and other law enforcement officers. Multiple officers returned fire.
The driver, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
As is normal protocol in police officer-involved shootings, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is examining the case.
