Mississippi man facing capital murder charges for death of infant

On March 22, 2024, deputies from the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at CR 520 regarding an unresponsive infant male child. Upon arrival, deputies, along with EMS and Lafayette County Fire Department, immediately initiated life-saving measures.
The child was swiftly transported to Baptist Hospital for further medical attention, but he was later pronounced deceased at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
In response to this tragic event, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death. After diligent efforts and extensive investigation, on April 4, Matthew Brown was arrested and charged with capital murder in connection to this case.
Sheriff Joey East expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased child, stating, “Our hearts go out to the family during this incredibly difficult time. We are committed to ensuring that justice is served in this case and will continue to work tirelessly to bring closure to the family.”
